We have been worshiping the flag for years without too much thought to why. The anthem was adopted back in the twenties with support of southerners who apparently wanted something close to worshiping the southern loss of the civil war. I guess the people in the north just rolled over and let them have it. So now that some football players are using it to protest police brutality a lot of white people just don't want to hear about any stuff about the police and accuse the players of disrespecting the flag. Most of us don't worship the confederate flag so worshiping the American flag has some dubious value too. All this patriotism makes me think of the saying that "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel".
