that the vote was rigged.

I didn't expect Kerry to beat the machines, but I did expect him to fight the results.

You know, my brother didn't vote for years
because he said his vote didn't count.

I used to scream at him about that.
Now it turns out that he was right.
I'll have to apologize.

The stuff about Hagel having an interest in ES&S and lying about that is true, but there's more to the story. The machines didn't win him his Senate seat.

First, Hagel was going to beat Nelson in 1996 no matter who controlled the voting machines. Nelson was still a Democratic governor in a Republican state and had promised not to run for any other offices until his term was up. Then he turned around and ran for the Senate. That pissed a lot of people off.

It wasn't a surprise upset no matter how many times people who've never been to Nebraska say it was.

That being said, Chuck spent this week in NH pressing the flesh and it's certain he's going to run for president in '08. I can't stand the guy because he pretends to play maverick Republican when he's never voted the other way in his life. I'd be shocked if he ended up voting against Bolton, unless, of course, the majority of Republicans vote against him. I just hope all the liberals who thinks he's on our side wake up before 2008.

"RE: #16 Diebold banned in California"

Well, that little action by elected Secretary of State Kevin Shelley led to a vicious and relentless smear campaign against him. I've told this story before. In essence, Shelley was politically strung up by a nasty combination of Diebold, California's print media, and the usual Republican operatives (cf: recall of Gray Davis) and driven from office in March.

His replacement was appointed by Schwarzenegger and approved by the California Legislature: Bruce McPherson, former R state senator from Santa Cruz, generally regarded as a thoughtful and fair man, but strangely, one of his first actions was to replace the elections head -- a professional who'd been doing his duties for 21 years -- with Alameda County's elections chief Brad Clark, who just so happens to think Diebold machines are the bomb, with a grand new title and job description. Indeed, McPherson came into office with a whole train of Repblican operatives, who now infest the Secretary of State's domain, as if in fief. A handful of county registrars -- those who favored unverifyable voting methods -- have gained immense clout. Wonder how that happened...

Meanwhile, on May 19, the Voting Systems and Procedures Panel will be holding a public hearing about Diebold. Members of the public are invited to attend this hearing and voice their concerns about Diebold's behavior. Thursday, May 19, 9 AM, 1500 11th Street, Sacramento.

Of course this is all part of the plan to turn California Red. Arnold's redistricting measure (which could go on the ballot as early as this November) is another part of the plan.

Bill Lockyer (elected Attorney General) is in the R's sights for a smear campaign to run him out of office, too, so that there would be no state officer to stand in the way of a complete R take over regardless of voters. A smear was launched a few weeks ago by a couple of newspapers but it fizzled out, in part because it was so blatant and transparent: a group that got a grant from the AG's office was accused of actually supporting the AG's position on issues. Gasp! Banner Headlines!!! Stop the Presses! Investigate! Hearings! Witnesses! It went nowhere because there was nothing wrong, patently and obviously, and the stories were an obvious attempt to gin up another smear to overturn another election. However, last week, Lockyer said he would not run for Governor next year, citing the grueling and vicious nature of campaigns... and some have thought the pre-smear launched against him was a big factor in his decision. (Also he announced he voted for Arnold in the recall election, which did not endear him to many Dems...)

Many of us are acutely aware of what is going on, and some of us raise the alarums. But we face an uphill struggle: it's difficult for people to focus on what's happening, in part because of the fact that Celebrity Justice and The Latest Car Chase are the only "news" most people get, and in part because people are so dambed busy just trying to stay afloat in this heaving econonomy. Election integrity is far down the list of issues to worry about. And superficially, to a lot of Californians, the Dems in office are singularly colorless and ineffective while the Rs -- who are seizing offices one by one, overturning elections thereby -- seem colorful and active. So it looks like Rs are the "good guys"...

Wot a mess...

He was a major funder of PBS...

This is how he feels about himself.

He funds a lot of things that people feel very STRONG about. On all sides of the issue.

>>>>>>>>While people in Perry give thanks to the hometown girl who married a California millionaire and never forgot her roots, in other communities, the money handed out by the couple sometimes is seen in a different light.

In Ohio and Texas, if the Ahmansons are known, it's probably as the money behind a push to place God alongside Darwin in science textbooks.

In U.S. Episcopal churches, their funding has helped fight the ordination of gay and lesbian clergy.

In political circles in many parts of the nation, their support for a theology known as Christian Reconstruction has created suspicion about their goals for government.

The Ahmansons don't shy from talking about the groups and ideas they back despite sometimes heavy criticism. They have strong beliefs and the cash to support them.

But they bristle at the idea their work is defined by its most controversial corners, while their benevolent projects in the middle ground are largely ignored.
