"The flag"

We have been worshiping the flag for years without too much thought to why. The anthem was adopted back in the twenties with support of southerners who apparently wanted something close to worshiping the southern loss of the civil war. I guess the people in the north just rolled over and let them have it. So now that some football players are using it to protest police brutality a lot of white people just don't want to hear about any stuff about the police and accuse the players of disrespecting the flag.
Most of us don't worship the confederate flag so worshiping the American flag has some dubious value too. All this patriotism makes me think of the saying that "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel".

"Actually, according to flag etiquette rules, they aren't disrespectful..."

People that make clothes out of the flag, put it on soda or beer or on a company logo is being disrespectful. Displaying the flag horizontal is disrespectful. I didn't know about that one.

But simply not displaying attention at the national anthem is technically not disrespectful.

One thing that makes my wife mad who is a pretty good singer is the terrible job the people who sing the anthem do. Some just plain murder the lyrics. I usually turn off the sound before a sporting event or tune in when the action starts.

"You'd think they would rehearse the lyrics."

Instead of getting out there in front of everyone and realizing they don't know.
