"A$$hole Texas governor commutes death row inmate's sentence. "
Let me be clear, I am against the death penalty. The reason governor Greg Abbott commuted the sentence was wrong. He pardoned his death sentence appointment for political reasons. He is running unopposed in the republican primary. The guy he pardoned from a death sentence is a cold blooded murderer. His father got him off. His father was also one of his son's victims.
What springs to mind are the poor dumb bastards who were innocent but were executed by the state of Texas anyway. The poor dumb bastard who was accused of burning his two children alive was executed. Highly professional forensic arson experts later said what happened at the man's trial was a travesty of justice.
The poor dumb crazy bastard who went off his state supplied meds and killed a man with a broadsword. They executed him even though they were the ones who denied him his medication.
Or the poor dumb bastard who was the subject of Errol Morris's excellent film "The Thin Blue Line". He happened to survive because of Morris mostly. When the state of Texas discovered that they were going to be seen as having an innocent man on death row they wanted to commute his sentence to life without parole. Lifers don't get to appeal their cases like death row inmates. Essentially sweeping him under the rug. Very chickenshit. But that didn't happen either.
One of the key words in this rant is POOR. Most of those guys on death row are piss poor. The state from time to time will even put an innocent man on there. That's why I'm against the death penalty.

Which probably makes minorities perception of justice in our state skewed towards white folks. I was talking with a black sheriff's deputy last night and he said people's perceptions is so important. So true.
